1. Jarvis Moss/DE-Florida If I'm the GM, I'd have probably sat on my pick knowing that none of the handful of teams in front of me needs a QB, which
means Brady Quinn (and a handful of picks) would have been mine for the taking. And that's exactly what transpired...but to Dallas instead. I'm just not
overly impressed with this year's prospects from the top on down--why not load up for what promises to be a monster draft in 08? Ok, back to reality.
Moss is a lean speed-rusher who could qualify as a OLB/DE combo player in a 3-4. Too bad we play a 4-3, which means he's probably going to be more
of a situational rusher. And I wouldn't burn a #1 (let alone trade up to do it) to take a player who may not be an every down lineman. I hope he's a solid
player but the Broncos didn't play the value game very well with this pick.
2. Tim Crowder/DE-Texas Ok, apparently Shanny is fed up with his inability to find any decent defensive linemen. Crowder is a pretty solid pick at this
point in the draft and at times has played like a first rounder. I would think that one of these two guys will pan out, so it's probably a good gamble to try to
ensure we fix an area that's been a problem ever since Trevor Pryce took off.
3. Ryan Harris/OT-Notre Dame I'm never against snagging linemen, so I like the pick. Harris is a guy with tons of talent who has been a bit of a
headcase and slightly injury prone. But he's definitely got the talent to make this team and eventually start if he can keep his head on straight. Solid
choice.
4. Marcus Thomas/DT-Florida I don't like this pick at all. Thomas has the talent to have been one of the first few d-linemen taken overall. But he has a
peanut for a brain and couldn't manage to keep his life in order. This guy had more arrests than starts at Florida, but may have actually been their best
player at the outset of what eventually became a championship season. But he got suspended for the year. And now you're going to toss this dude a few
million dollars and expect him to succeed? Pleeeeeeeeeease! Shanny bungled this pick and wasted a few late rounders getting higher up to do it.
Final Analysis
I can't help but think this draft is a near total loss. We gave up too many picks to get too few players--all of which carry quite a bit of risk. I just don't
understand why Shanny can't just sit tight and let the draft come to him. I figure we'll get one starter out of the Moss/Crowder combo and a 50/50 shot at
getting a starter between Harris and Thomas. And that's just not enough value, depth or upside from a process that should yield 3-4 eventual starters
every year. Grade: D
