1. George Foster/OL Although I was hoping for Stanford OL Kwame Harris (SFO) or Miami DT William Joseph (NYG), Foster is both huge and
athletic. He seems to have the feet for our line scheme but he'll easily be the largest piece of beef on our line. He would have gone inside the
top ten if he hadn't been in car accident last summer, which left him with a badly injured wrist. Don't look for much this year, unless he is an
animal in camp. A great long-range selection.
2. Terry Pierce/LB Finally, we have a linebacker who isn't 5' 11" and 210 lbs. Pierce is a hard-hitting, 250 pound beast who will immediately
begin hunting heads on special teams. Kansas St. has been churning out a lot of under-rated defensive players lately, so I think this guy could
end up being the rookie star this summer.
3. Quentin Griffin/RB Small but ultra-quick, Griffin is a smaller version of Clinton Portis. He wasn't high on a lot of draft boards because of his
size but this guy is a football player. He'll be the perfect 3rd down role player because he's a decent blocker and has excellent hands out of the
backfield. And if Shanny likes him, he'll be a stud because he never misses on RB's.
4. Nick Eason/DT Nick represented pretty good value at this point in the draft. He has good size and speed but he's very inconsistent. One play
he looks like Tarzan, the next play he's Jane. But often that's the type of player who pulls it together once they become pros. He'll make the team.
5. Bryant McNeal/DE Nick Eason's pass-rushing linemate at Clemson, McNeal is a tremendous football player who slid down due to lack of 40
speed. But the way I look at it, if your DE has to run 40 yards on a play, you've got much bigger problems. He plays better than he times and has
good football instincts. Another solid selection.
6. Ben Claxton/C Denver seems to draft a center every other year, as they are often able to convert back and forth between center and guard.
Claxton seems to have been a bit of a reach for the fifth round but there will probably be a place on the roster for him.
7. Adrian Madise/WR Sort of a wide receiver in a running back's body type. He's an intriguing prospect because he wasn't well known until late in
his senior year at TCU. He's got solid speed and may knock out Herb Haygood for the 5th WR spot with his punt return abilities.
8. Aaron Hunt/DE Near the end of the draft, Denver shifted toward some high-risk/high-reward prospects. Hunt is a speedy, edge-type rusher
who could be brought in on passing situations only. A bit smallish for DE, he's the opposite of earlier choice, Bryant McNeal who has the body
but not the speed. I'll take a guess and say this guy ends up on the scrap heap.
9. Clint Mitchell/DE This guys is boom or bust for sure. He could have used another year at Florida, so he's a bit of a long-range prospect. He's
very tall but needs to add some bulk. I think he'll survive the cut but we won't hear from him at all until 2004.
10. Ahmaad Galloway/RB A very solid RB who suffered a season-ending injury. Look for him to end up on the PUP list and to resurface during
training camp 2004.
Final Analysis
I gave last year's draft a B and it turned out to be extremely solid. Portis is a superstar and Lelie has pro-bowl potential. S Sam Brandon and DT
Monsanto Pope may be starting this fall and DT Dorsett Davis and TE Jeb Putzier have long-range potential. So I'll give this one a B+. Foster,
Pierce and Griffin look like sure contributors, with Foster being a potential anchor for the line for years to come. And two of the four DL's will end
up contributing down the road. There's nobody spectacular in this group but five solid players is a great draft.
